Top 5 Loves - Idocare

I met with Humaa, the creator of Idocare - a new Singaporean brand of safe cleaning products for the home. We had a great chat and I look forward to sharing the interview with you -  watch out for it this Friday on Behind The Brand!

When it comes to being green she’s definitely in the know. I asked her to share with us  her top 5 eco loves!

                                                           <><><>

1. Top eco-friendly tip:

Consciously recycle! I have 3 little bins in my house that I fill up everyday and take them to the drop-off bin myself!

2. Top eco-friendly restaurant:

Living Greens, it’s a really great vegetarian restaurant

3. Top eco-friendly baby product:

Angel Baby Bottom Balm - I use it on everything!  nappy rash, cuts, mosquito bites, it’s my cure-all!

4. Top eco-friendly kids toy:

My daughter’s cardboard kitchen - I can just fold it away when she’s not playing with it. Best thing is, when she grows out of it - it’s recyclable!

5. Top new eco-friendly love:

Worm composting! I’ve just started - I picked up the kit from Choose and it comes complete with everything you need - including a bag of worms! My daughter loves it and it’s great that she gets to see the process.

Thanks Humaa!

The winemakers made the decision to keep the harvest small, which means they produce less wine, but avoid the need for pesticides and chemicals in growing their grapes.

Behind The Brand - Touch The Toes

image

I stumbled upon Touch The Toes a couple weeks back, while out in Arab Street one day.  It was just one of those places that stays with you, and I remember thinking - a yoga shop that’s eco-friendly, has a piano and sells chocolate? I have to know more!  I reached out, and the owners Wuen and Kelly graciously invited me over for a Saturday afternoon chat.

image

The moment I walked in, I was struck once again with that soothing smell of essential oils. Kelly was behind the counter smiling and Wuen rushed over to meet us.

The best way for me to describe their shop is… ‘comfortable’ - it’s like visiting an old friend, you feel welcome.

We talked for over an hour and, it’s funny, the whole chat, much like their energy, was very active! We sat on the chair, moved down to the floor, stood, walked around, sat back down! But, at the same time, it was very calm and relaxed. It’s this balance that they have found in life that I find so intriguing and one that they both attribute to yoga.

my mind is always on, but with yoga I can lose my self and just breathe

We got to talking about how it all started for them…

I don’t know which is more amazing to me, the circumstances of where they met or of how they decided to start a business together. Where they met was at a super-intense 40-day yoga challenge. It’s a workshop that has you wake up at sunrise, come together and perform yoga - every single morning for 40 days straight! Wow! The thing is, these kinds of activities will naturally bring like-minded people together and that’s exactly what happened with Kelly and Wuen. They bonded on having a similar outlook on life and realized that they shared the dream of one day owning a shop. Kelly remembers talking to Wuen during the challenge about how difficult it was to find interesting yoga wear. They said to each other “We should do something about this!” And this is what I find amazing -  right there and then the decision was made and they actually set out to do it. I always wonder, what makes someone take that leap to actually go after a dream - for them they said it just felt right.

the business came very organically, very natural - it all felt right. Quite intuitive, the way it all came together.

image

I asked them, why eco-friendly?

They said, simply, “It had to be.” Wuen had just returned from Madagascar from a marine conversation project. She was inspired by the experience “People there live with so little, they survive by being sustainable.” If they were to create a business, they knew it had to be one that promoted and support a greener life.

I look at what they’ve accomplished in such a short period of time and I’m inspired! They told me stories about their search for great products, for the space, the disappointments and setback - all the things that come with being an entrepreneur - yet they never gave up or compromised along the way. They have carefully curated their shop with pieces that are not only chosen for their quality but also because they fall in line with their beliefs: That we need to be conscious of our impact on earth.

Wuen looked around and said  “This shop is us” and I have to say, I think they’re right!

Pop in for a look and a chat. Ask about the yoga and essential oil workshop that they hold and join a community of people, like yourself, who share a similar outlook on life. Hey, you never know - great things can happen when like-minded people come together!

Top 5 Eco Workout Tips <> Touch The Toes

I recently met Wuen and Kelly, the girls behind Touch The Toes - a brand new eco-friendly yoga & fitness apparel shop on Arab Street. Look out for their spot on Behind The Brand this Friday!

image

Wuen and Kelly in their boutique

<><><>

These girls live and breathe yoga! Wuen and Kelly shared some tips on how to
make your workout kit more eco-friendly!

Tip 1 - Carry a reusable water container - the gym will sell you bottled water, but it’s expensive and wasteful! Great tip: add a couple drops of essential oil to your water for flavour and an added health boost! But make sure it’s therapeutic grade! Kelly’s favorite: Young Living’s lemon oil.

Tip 2 - Wear something comfortable, pretty and eco-friendly!

Tip 3 - Most gyms provide plastic bags for your post-workout gear - carry your own reusable baggie and say no to plastic bags!

Tip 4 - Pack some organic toiletries - Wuen’s favorite: Intelligent Nutrients

Tip 5 -  Stash a yummy post workout treat - the girls agree - Ombar probiotic chocolate bars! They’re healthy, organic and delicious!

Thanks Wuen and Kelly!

DIY - Ikea Magnet Tin Terrarium

image

image

A good idea is to surround yourself with nature, especially indoors - where we spend a lot of our time. Studies suggest that the very presence of nature gives you a sense of vitality and helps to ward off feelings of exhaustion. Try this - next time you’re at Ikea, pick up a set of magnet tins. You can make this easy air plant terrarium to add a little spark of life to your environment!

Great for the office!

The Wet Market

Singapore might not have a farmer’s market the way other countries do - but we have our version - The Wet Market. Most of the produce will be from local farms or Malaysia and that’s a great thing to support. Maybe over the weekend you can take a stroll to your local wet market - and look at all the beautiful colors!

Create something unique!

POST EDIT: I kept searching around and saw that The Pantry at Loewens Garden have set up a farmer’s market with the idea to “capture a piece of home – the simple pleasure of people chatting about food and being passionate about produce.” If you had been missing that kind of thing from your hometown or would like to see what’s it’s all about - might make for a fun weekend! Behind The Brand - Kanga Organics

image

I first came across Kanga Organics when looking for skin care products online. The moment I saw their website, I was immediately impressed by how transparent they are. Each skin care line is presented with the ingredient list right there for you to see! Full of detailed descriptions about the products and the companies who make them, the website is a fountain of information and a reflection of passion. I knew there was a story here and so I reached out.

Joey Lam, the owner of Kanga Organics, invited me over to her place of business for a chat. When I arrived, she had her two main lines - Ola Hawai’i and Skin Blossoms - all laid out so that I could smell and feel them for myself.

She opened up to me about her business, her products and why she chose this unconventional path into organic, natural skin care.

My personal reason for going organic is animal friendly first of all, then not toxic to my skin, and of course eco-friendly.

Joey’s love for beauty products started early. She remembers she would spend “hours in Watson’s reading product descriptions to see what they do.” It was an article on natural skin care that opened her eyes. She began to “read [labels] with much more focus on the ingredients.” Joey said, it was “shocking to read that all the products I used to buy  contained certain amounts of ingredients that were listed in the article as bad for the skin.”

A search for organic products led to frustration - finding options in Singapore to be too expensive. She believed that organic skin care should not only be for the privileged - but a safe option for everyone. Lucky for us, she took the plunge and decided to bring her own skin care line to Singapore.

I had taken the decision to keep the prices affordable and low so more can afford them, and thus hopefully make their switch to go organic instead of using the commercial chemical-laden products in the market.

It’s not been easy though. She encounters a lot of consumers still holding misconceptions about the organic market.  With Singapore not having stringent cosmetic regulations,  Joey sees a lot of products marketing themselves as organic or natural, yet still containing those toxic chemicals that are bad for us and our planet. She spends a lot of time educating consumers because she believes in what she’s doing: “some people think they alone can’t make a difference, but they can!”

I was really interested to know how she came to choose her specific brands. She said she did a lot of research, tested the samples and fell in love!

We played with testers from her Skin Blossom and Ola Hawai’i lines, and talked about why she loved them so -

Skin Blossom

image

Joey told me a story about her experience with this line, which I think is a great indication of what you’re dealing with here. When she received her second batch from the manufacturer, Joey noticed the shade of color was slightly different from the first.  Ever vigilant, she called up the creator of the skin care line herself! Right away she was put at ease - the creator explained that depending on when the fruit was harvested, and in which season, the color could vary slightly. Since it’s not something manufactured in a lab, not processed and manipulated - what you end up with is nature in all its varying shades. I love that!

Full of natural goodness and free of harmful chemicals, this is your everyday, daily-routine skin care line and with the low price point, it can afford to be! I think it’s also perfect for Singapore’s weather - it’s really light - moisturizing you from the inside without leaving that heavy or greasy feel on the outside.

The way my skin absorbed this product was really quite amazing - you have to feel it for yourself!

Ola Hawai’i

image

My first reaction when I smelled the bottle was exactly how Joey said everyone reacts: “The smell!” It was as if I were actually holding a jar of pure passion fruit pulp, or, for my favorite - real chocolate coffee! I seriously wanted to eat it. Check out the ingredients - so natural - it reads like a dessert menu!

And it’s in the ingredient list where you really appreciate this brand - and why Joey chose it. You won’t find synthetic chemicals here. Mostly organic, it supports small farms and is made naturally with botanicals, fruit, sea elements and oils. A look on the website will tell you to about how it’s grown in harmony with the land and carries with it a beautiful message. I encourage you all to read it.

When you’re on the Kanga Organics website, have a look around. Joey also carries another skin care line with some pretty impressive organic content! She supports a small community in Laos too by selling their hand made bags and talks a lot about some of the other charities that her sales support - there really is just a lot of good stuff there - go check it out!

Thanks Joey!

Vaseline - why petroleum-based products should be avoided

image

Do you use Vaseline? Actually, more specifically, do you use petroleum jelly? A lot of people, including myself, use it because in fact it is highly effective. Some people use it as a moisturizer, on scrapes and bruises, for lips or for cuticles, to soften feet… I used it on my babies’ bottoms to prevent diaper rash, and while I probably didn’t cause them too much harm, I certainly wasn’t helping them. Lucky me, and lucky you, I’ve since found much better alternatives.

The problem with petroleum jelly is actually its selling point: it is cheap and effective.

Cheap: Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of the petroleum manufacturing process. Yes, petroleum as in petrol. The raw materials in petroleum jelly (what you smear on your skin) were actually discovered on an oil rig in 1859 - it was found building up in the machinery. Nice.

Because petrolatum is derived from crude oil, it needs to be refined. Now, if refinement is done at a low-grade level, you risk having a product still containing the toxic chemicals found in oil - some which have been linked to cancer. As a customer, there is no way for you to know if your product contains a low-grade oil - and for many manufacturers of beauty products it is tempting to use the less expensive, lower grade oils. This is why brand trust is so important - get to know the company you buy your products from. And understand why the better option sometimes cost a little more - they have better ingredients! But, let me stop before I go off on a tangent.

Right, Effective: Vaseline is a highly effective barrier. It retains moisture and protects the skin by sitting right on top of your pores and stopping anything from getting in or out. It’s like wrapping your body in cling film - suffocating it. Your skin can’t breathe!

And the thing is, petroleum jelly has no nutritional value for your skin. Yes, it’s effective at at what it does, but that’s like being really hungry and eating junk food. Sure, the food has done its job of filling your belly, but it’s not going to nourish you.

If you want something that will protect the skin and retain its moisture, but also nourish it and let it breathe, make sure it’s made of plant-derived oils - which are rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins.

Here’s a yummy option available in Singapore:

image

Badger Baby Balm
(Bud Cosmetics $11.90)

Why it’s good: Made of extra virgin olive oil, natural beeswax and organic calendula oil - it’s infused with organic chamomile to to soothe sensitive skin. Good for adults too! Use it on any area that needs a little extra love.

even if you don’t use Vaseline, petroleum jelly can be found in a lot of products:

Watch out for: petroleum-based ingredients - petroleum jelly, petrolatum, mineral oil & paraffin

Substitute them with: bees wax, cocoa butter and vegetable oils

Behind the Brand: Lights of Bliss natural candles

image

I recently caught up with the team behind Lights of Bliss, an online retail shop of natural candles. I was curious to know how they came to know natural candles and to decide to bring this concept to Singapore. The answer: Passion!

The husband and wife team, Gowri and Markus, first came across natural wax candles while overseas. They fell in love with the purity of the candles and their alluring scents which had the ability to transform their mood. The feeling was “magical” and made them feel like “kids in a candy store.”

This fascination turned to a passion as they began to educate themselves about the candle industry and learned the toxic effects of paraffin and lead wicks. Shocked by this “eye-opening discovery”, Gowri and Markus remember that being the point where “we decided to not to use unnatural candles that could cause a potential risk to us, our loved ones and not forgetting, our beautiful planet.”

However, they found it was a daunting task to find a wide selection of eco-friendly candles, here in Singapore. And so, fueled by their love of candles and their education, Lights of Bliss was born.

I asked them a few question about their candles:

Little Green Dot: What are the different type of waxes used in your candles?

Lights of Bliss: We use Soy Wax - which is 100% non-toxic & all natural,  Beeswax - which is a 100% natural fuel created by bees and Palm Wax - which is an all-natural renewable, sustainable and biodegradable resource that is obtained from palm oil.

Little Green Dot: What are some of the major concerns with paraffin candles?

Lights of Bliss: Paraffin candles contain up to 11 Carcinogen compounds that are toxic air contaminants. They release toxic fumes that are similar to those found in auto exhaust thus they could trigger respiratory irritation due to the allergenic ingredients found in paraffin. They also cause poor indoor air quality.

Little Green Dot: What are the ingredients in your candles and how are they scented?

Lights of Bliss:  Most of the paraffin candles in the market are made of animal-based stearic acid (an animal-derived fat from meatpacking plants) and being a vegetarian myself, I could not condone that so we decided to source for candles that are made of plant based stearic acid. The fragrances are either derived from 100% natural and pure essential oils or from premium grade of fragrance oils. The latter are: eco-friendly; not tested on animals; produced by top European Fragrance houses; phthalate and nitro musk free; safe in bath and body products; and are 100% pure - never cut or diluted.

Little Green Dot: What are some of your most popular/best selling scents and candles?

Lights of Bliss: Our banana leaf candle which won the UNESCO award for its design and the soy wax candles in designer glass.

Little Green Dot: For each of you, which is your personal favorite candle?

Lights of Bliss: My hubby and I share the similar taste when candles are concerned :) Being a candleholic, I do not have a personal favourite. I love all my candles as they are unique in their own special way.

                                                         ***********

For me, when I saw their “Relax For Her” candle I was in love! Made so pure that you can even use the melt pool to moisturize your skin!

Also, check out their New’D candle - beautifully scented with vanilla, this 100% soy wax candle is made in recycled glass! I think it perfectly sums up what they are about - A true love and respect for nature.

And you can use the melt pool as a mosturizer too! Far out!

Chateau de sable does organic kid's clothing!

For anyone with kiddies, I’m sure you’ve come across the shop Chateau de sable. Even if you haven’t seen the shop, perhaps without realizing it, at some point you’ve seen a little girl wearing one of their dresses. They’re everywhere! It’s very French, very chic and now, going green ! They’ve come out with a selection of clothing in 100% organic cotton!

Now, it’s not incredibly obvious when you first walk in. The organics are mixed in with all of the rest, not given their rightful place!  But, they are there - so if you do find yourself in their shop, make sure to ask for their organic options and let them know - we want more of it!

Live with passion

I am so inspired by people with passion. It’s not just about the subject of their passion, but it’s that energy that they posses. That drive to do the thing you love, everyday - despite how crazy it may seem.

I truly believe that the most beautiful characteristic a person can possess is passion. When they speak about what they love, their eyes sparkle. They talk with a smile and as you listen, you begin to smile. It’s infectious and the best thing you can do is to surround yourself around that kind of energy.

Here are some videos I like to watch, featuring some pretty interesting characters that always make me smile:

This is Brent Farley, he loves to find a better way to do things and spends his days inventing and building his creations, even though he has not “succeeded” yet.

This is John Nese, he loves soda and started his company on his own terms.

This is Gary Vaynerchuck, he loves wine and has made 1000+ You Tube videos solely about wine.

That makes him also passionate about social media.

I see that same passion in the entrepreneurs behind the businesses in Singapore that are going against the current and are bringing in eco-friendly options. So I’m starting a series called Behind The Brand - to introduce you to these passionate and insanely driven people doing their bit to make the world a little bit better. Look out for the first one this Friday!
